Simply put the Oil Cleanse Method is the process of using oils and steam to clear your skin of oil and grime.
What? That doesn’t make sense.
Well, if you think of it in chemistry terms it actually makes a lot of sense. Basic chemistry tells us “like dissolves like.” Therefore oil dissolves oil. What that means is if you use oil to massage your face it will gather the hardened oil that holds grime stuck in your pores. Then all you have to do is wipe that old oil and grime away. There is no need for harsh soap and chemicals to clean your face. The “soap and water” and synthetic acne treatments have become old fashioned. You know, like back in the 50’s when the picture of the perfect woman was one with dish gloves on her hands. We don’t think like that anymore, but for some reason this concept of washing the grime from your face with soap and chemicals (like you use to clean bacon grease from a skillet) has stuck around – pun intended. One quick Google search will show you some amazing oil cleanse results; even from those with severe acne.
So how does it work?
The basic The Oil Cleanse Method starts with a mix of several different oils (with different purposes) in the correct amount massaged into the skin. This is followed by a hot towel placed on your face to steam for a few minutes, and the oil is promptly wiped away.
Well, you could research the proper oils for your face and order them, and then mix them up and put them in a store bought bottle, or jar, by your sink to dip your fingers in twice a day and drip all over your counter. Or, you can follow my method.
All-Purpose Face and Body Butter
In the jar pictured above I combined Avocado oil, Shea butter, Goat’s Milk powder, Optiphen (a gentle preservative to prevent bacteria and mold growth), and (in this particular jar) our Lil’ Lavender fragrance oil to create a semi-solid butter in order to make the oil cleanse easier and less messy. No drips, no mixing.
So here’s how you do it.
- Do Not wet your face. Scoop a finger-full (technical term) into your palm.
- Rub your hands together until the butter melts.
- Massage the butter into your face for 3-5 minutes (depending on how quickly you need to get ready in the morning), and BTW the longer you massage the better.
- Step 4 has two options:
- Wet a towel under hot water and place over your face for 3-5 minutes, or until it loses heat. (Recommended for those sensitive to steam)
- Go ahead and buy a cheepy Conair face steamer like THIS ONE on Amazon, or one like it. No affiliation. I bought this because I felt the steam from the towel did not last long enough to adequately open my pores
5. Now with a hot, wet towel gently wipe the oil from your face.
6. (Optional) Take a pea sized amount of the butter and rub into your face.
Step 6 is for those whose skin is especially dry (like mine). I like the extra moisture and the dewy glow the butter gives my skin throughout the day, so I apply the pea sized supplement. If your skin is extra oily, don’t worry this will not make it worse. If you’re concerned start out with small amounts of the oil and go from there. You’ll quickly learn that this is a very different kind of oil and your skin will naturally begin to balance over time.
When I started this (I'll call it the #OilCleanseChallenge) I had already been using the all-purpose Face and Body Butter formula as a face moisturizer only, so my skin started out looking pretty healthy as shown below.
What I decided to do then, to show you the results, was work backwards. I used the Face and Body Butter as an oil cleanse for a solid month and then abruptly switched to a common facial cleanser and moisturizer that you would find in any department store. After doing the #OilCleanseChallenge with the Face and Body Butter for a month this was the result:
It’s very similar, but you can see that my face looks fuller and has more of a healthy color to it. It’s hard to see in these pictures but I did have small bumps and blemishes in the first picture even after using the Butter as a moisturizer only. In the second picture, after doing the #OilCleanseChallenge for a month those had disappeared and the laugh lines around my eyes had even subsided. To the touch my skin was amazingly soft and plump. I can tell you this is the healthiest my skin has ever felt.
Then I quit
After the #OilCleanseChallenge month, I put the Face and Body Butter away and picked up my former facial cleansing method. I can’t tell you what I used specifically for legal reasons, but I can tell you that it’s one of the most popular facial cleanse methods you see on the shelf today. Here are the results after two weeks of the common facial cleanse method:
Yikes, right. My skin appears pale, gray and dull. The pimple you see near my mouth is popped up quickly and there are several others dotting my face. The bumps and blemishes have returned and my fine lines seem to have deepened again. (At least I’m laughing about it right?) Something I didn’t expect happened also, though. My self-esteem has taken a dip. Because I look more worn down I feel more worn down. I’ve stopped looking in the mirror as much, and someone I work with even commented that I’ve been looking tired lately. (No, Terry, for the last time. I am not 30!).

So am I going back?
You bet these sorry wrinkles I am! I knew starting out that the common facial cleansing method wasn’t for me. That’s why I created something unique in the first place. I’d heard a lot about the oil cleanse method’s great results, but at first I was skeptical. It just seems like soap should wash oil away, but biologically it doesn’t work like that. Once I scraped up the courage to try this raved-about method I just couldn’t go back. Now, I’ve restarted the #OilCleanseChallenge and I don’t see an end in sight. I love it. I love how my face feels and looks. I love that others notice how amazing my skin looks. My husband even told me that my skin is looking better than it has in a long time.
Ouch Babe! But thanks…
The all-purpose Face and Body Butter will be available April 15 when we launch it together with our totally sweet Body Lotion. By the way, in usual Wild Texas Soaps fashion, both are, of course, made with goat’s milk. When using our Face and Body Butter you’ll notice a little exfoliation (from the Goat’s Milk powder) as well as the moisture from the Avocado oil and Shea Butter. That’s to help gently scrub away dead skin cells along with the grime removal, because if you don’t slough off dead skin cells, they kinda hang out, so I’ve solved that problem for you.
If you’d rather try experimenting yourself checkout this website dedicated to The Oil Cleanse Method and Wellness Mama, another wealth of knowledge about all things natural as well as her take on the Oil Cleanse Method.
